Make Great Green Smoothies with these 5 tips

Don’t Go Crazy

Your new found eagerness to experience the fantastic taste and health benefits of Green Smoothies could also be your downfall. Too many greens or the wrong combination of ingredients could lead to a nasty bitter taste and even some stomach upsets. When you’re making your first few green smoothies, stick to the instructions and consider investing in some proper tools like these amazing collapsible measuring cups and spoons until you can guesstimate portions like a pro.

Be Prepared

Life can be busy, mornings especially. No one wants to be woken up to the sound of a roaring bender at 6AM! Good news is that you can prepare and make your smoothies in advance.

If you are constantly on the go, poor preparation can lead to poor food choices. You can prepare and blend your green smoothies the night before, keeping it in the fridge in an airtight container for up to two days, helping you to eat well on those busier days. Just remember to give it a good shake before you open it as the ingredients can settle a bit.

Be Naturally Sweet

Artificial sweeteners and processed sugars are not great but some of the ‘greener’ smoothies can sometimes taste a little bit bitter. Offset this by using natural sweeteners like ripe bananas, pears, mangoes, strawberries and dates.

Honey is also a great natural sweetener, but be careful as one tablespoon has 17 grams of carbohydrates and little else unless you go for the raw unprocessed products.

Chill out

So we cheated on this one as it is technically two tips, if your blender can cope with ice, why not try swapping the ice for frozen fruit instead? Cut your fruit into chunks and freeze them, and then toss them straight into the blender! You could freeze all the ingredients for a certain recipe together so all you need to do is grab the container from the freezer and chuck it all in, in one go!

You could go for prepacked frozen fruit but a better idea is to get to the market late in the day and pick up some bargains, dice them up and put them straight into the freezer, saving money, waste and time!

Break it down into smaller batches

Smoothies should be smooth. If you are finding that you are getting too many bits, try breaking down the recipe into stages. Start by just blending your leafy greens with some of your chosen base liquid. Then add some of the softer fruits and the rest of your liquid and blend some more, then add your remaining fruits and complete the blend.
